Those of us with modestly sized open kitchens know the importance of counter organization; here are some of our preferred strategies for containing—and beautifying—countertop clutter. Video by Jason Jurgens.

Above: For dish scrubber containment, I use the heavyweight pewter Measuring Beaker from venerable Italian company Match; it's 6 inches high and is handmade by artisans in Northern Italy; $144 at Tabula Tua. Although the price is punishing, I've had mine for 15 years; because of its anchoring heft, it's ideal for holding dish brushes and bottle cleaners. Above R: Dish Brush from Germany; made of beechwood and sisal; $6 at Brook Farm General Store.

The couple behind EmersonMade (a line of handmade fabric flowers, wedding accessories, and items for the home) moved from Manhattan to coastal New Hampshire a couple of years ago, where they live and work in a vintage farmhouse. We like their take on monogrammed table linens, block printed in a retro typeface.

Architect Visit: John Pawson Kitchen Roundup

0

Iconic British architect John Pawson has kitchen appliances like the rest of us; however, his genius lies in the way he conceals countertop clutter behind cabinet doors. As Tamsin Blanchard writes in the Guardian, "The question everyone wants to ask John Pawson, who appears to live his life with only the clothes on his back and the bare walls of his home, is 'Where's all your stuff?' Well, I have the answer. The general mess and chaos is all there; it's just hidden behind closed doors. What Pawson has managed to do in his own west London home is not pare down his life to a Zen-like minimum of possessions and stuff, but to build a house with adequate storage. Open any of the cupboard doors in the family's kitchen, and you will be relieved to discover that John Pawson is a human being; he's just a bit more organized." Here's a roundup of Pawson-designed kitchen and dining spaces (as well as the Pawson-designed kitchen system for Obumex, shown below).

N.B. For a closeup view of Pawson's work, visit "John Pawson: Plain Space," a comprehensive exhibit at the Design Museum in London on view from September 22, 2010 to January 30, 2011. Go to the Design Museum for more information; the companion book, John Pawson: Plain Space, by Alison Morris, is available through Amazon.

Above: The John Pawson Kitchen System for Belgian company Obumex is "a flexible kit of elements in which every details is considered, where all visual noise is subdued and where waterspout and taps become pieces of domestic sculpture." It's classic Pawson—the only protruding item is a simple spout (the tap levers are hidden from view). All essentials (drawer pulls, hinges, undermount sink) are concealed beneath the 4-inch-thick slab counter, which is available in Carrara marble, waxed American walnut, lava stone, or brushed stainless steel. For sourcing information, go to Obumex.

For those who covet a John Pawson–designed environment (myself included) but lack the fiscal reserves, here's something more accessible: a roundup of Pawson-designed kitchen tools, which bring a new level of asceticism to the domestic front.

John Pawson is the current artist-in-residence at the Cape Cod Modern House Trust (see Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: Kugel/Gips House in Wellfleet) and will be speaking about his work on Saturday evening, August 21, at the Wellfleet Public Library. Located in Montreal's fashionable Outremont neighborhood, on the west side of Laurier Street, Les Touilleurs is a high-end kitchen emporium with a working demonstration kitchen and an impeccably designed interior by Louise Savoie. Owners François Longpré and Sylvain Côté aim to create a "classic store with big open pantry displays that evoke true kitchen feelings." Among the wares: Wüsthof-Trident knives, All-Clad and Mauviel pots and pans, and hand-carved, beeswax-finished maple spoons and paddles by Quebec artisan Tom Littledeer. The couple has also added Gourmet Trips to their offerings, most recently a trip to Bretagne, with an upcoming trip to Chicago. Go to Les Touilleurs for more information.

Office Visit: Murphy Burnham & Buttrick in New York

Manhattan-based Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects is adept at creating light-filled, open-feeling spaces in urban enviroments, partly through the use of glass in unexpected applications. "Glass is a powerful way to open up tight spaces," the architects say. "Because of its qualities of transparency, translucency, and reflection, glass immediately brings a sense of depth to a space. The play of light on glass adds to a feeling of expansiveness." Here are a few projects showcasing how the architects use glass in various applications; see more of the firm's work at Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects.

Designer Visit: James Huniford on Long Island

New York–based design luminary James Huniford has worked on some of the grandest projects of the past decade (until recently he was a partner, with Stephen Sills, at Sills-Huniford, a reigning NYC firm), including an overhaul of the St. Regis Hotel. We like this modest beach house on Long Island by Huniford; featuring a restrained palette, vintage wood paneling, furniture by Donald Judd, and subtle nautical accessories. See more of the designer's solo work at Huniford.

Steal This Look: Nautical Fixtures and Fittings in the Kitchen

This kitchen features an unexpected mix of materials, including natural wood-grain cabinetry, marble tiles, and nautical-inspired brass hardware. We particularly like the use of the bulkhead boat lights over the sink and under the shelving; for more ideas, see Hardware: Marine-Style Household Hardware.

N.B. If you prefer brass that will develop an aged patina, be sure to choose unlacquered brass fixtures and fittings.
