Appliances: Morso Wood Stoves

Spotted in Dwell: a simple, sustainable, energy-efficient cabin in Maine, designed by architect Alex Scott Porter. We especially like the classic cast iron wood stove from Danish company Morso. Made of 98 percent recycled materials, Morso stoves meet the strictest environmental standards (the company has received 27 Nordic Swan eco labels). Go to Morso for dealer information.

Above; Architect Alex Scott Porter used the tiny Classic Forest Stove from Morso, which is based on a design from the 1930s. At 28 inches high, 13 inches wide, and 28 inches deep, the Forest Stove is a good small-space choice.

Architect Visit: Albert, Righter & Tittmann in Vermont

SPONSORED POST

For this rambling family retreat in the hills of Vermont, Boston-based architects Albert, Righter & Tittmann took their cues from the New England farmhouse vernacular and the owners' Northern European heritage (the husband has German ancestry and the wife is of Swedish descent). Firm principal John Tittmann says the team looked to the classically detailed villas of 19th-century German architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel for inspiration, while the sparse, clean-lined interiors reflect Swedish traditions

A winner of the 2010 myMarvin Architect's Challenge, the project was recognized for its elegant and clean design, featuring Marvin's energy-efficient tilt/turn and double-hung windows and French doors throughout. For anyone embarking on a remodeling or construction project—large or small—Marvin offers the myMarvin Remodeling Planner, a free, easy-to-use tool that allows you to create room layouts for your entire house using your own dimensions. Start with a floor plan, add furniture, windows and doorways. View from above or in elevation view (there's also a budget calculator and scrapbook for storing your own images).

Paints & Palettes: Sydney Harbour Paint Company

Peter Lewis, founder of Porter's Paint in Australia (and Sydney Harbour Paint Company in the US), was inspired to start his business after discovering formulas for Mediterranean paint washes in his grandfather's archives (he was the builder of Sydney's Capitol Theatre and an accomplished colorist). Porter's Paints offers a range of natural, water-based wall finishes, from milk paint to lime wash to mineral paint. Go to Sydney Harbour Paint Company for more information.

Above: Porter's Milk Paint has a rustic, chalky appearance.

Above: Porter's Venetian Glaze is a water-based high-gloss glaze that brings life, depth, and translucency to surfaces.

Above: Porter's Interno Lime Wash; the paint gently "blooms" after application, giving an instant, rustic, provincial-style aged finish.

Located in antiques-centric Hudson, New York, Henry is a shop run by artist and Bard sculpture teacher Nancy Shaver, who chooses objects for "their visual qualities, color, shape, form, texture," she says. "All are singular and chosen for decorative purposes, with the belief that almost anything can be decorative in a specific setting."

N.B. The recently released book Henry at Home, from Sobercove Press ($20), presents photographs of objects from Henry as they appear in the homes of the people who purchased them as well as artwork by Shaver.

Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: Hotel Brosundet in Alesund, Norway

The Hotel Brosundet sits on the old harborfront in Ålesund, a town on the west coast of Norway, and is situated in an old warehouse. The modern-meets-rustic interiors were designed by Oslo- and NY-based Snohetta Architecture, who pay homage to the building's history by leaving the exposed brick walls and rustic wood beams untouched. The modern elements, such as the custom white oak furniture and frosty modern bathrooms, were designed to both contrast and complement the the old construction.

Located at the corner of Allen and Delancey on the Lower East Side, White Slab Palace is a Nordic-style cocktail bar (signature drinks include the Bloody Beet, made with beet juice). Owned by Swedish photographer Annika Sundvik and her husband, John Lavelle, the boite features a moody vibe (we especially like the distressed teal blue velvet banquets and stools) and salvaged pieces, including a mantelpiece from a Masonic temple in Yonkers. N.B. See a slideshow of the space at New York Magazine.

Affordable, functional, and stylish is the mantra behind the newly opened Casa Camper boutique hotel in Berlin. Located in the Mitte area, near the Hackesher Markt and many museums, galleries and restaurants, Casa Camper is the second hotel created by Spanish shoe company Camper (the first is located in Barcelona). Designed by Fernando Amat (of the famed Vinçon in Barcelona) and Jordi Tio, the hotel has spacious common areas, a penthouse bodega, bikes for hire, and bathrooms lit by natural daylight. French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec designed the glamorous on-site Dos Palillos Restaurant as a stage for the culinary wizardry of El Bulli alum Albert Raurich.

Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: Pane e Acqua in Milan

Pane e Acqua, a slightly madcap restaurant in the Magenta district of Milan, was designed by famed furniture impresario Paola Navone for the equally famous shopkeeper Rossana Orlandi, whose retail store, Spazio Rossana Orlandi, is down the street. The creative curatorial energy Orlandi brings to her design store is fully evident in the restaurant, which is a perpetual work in progress. Orlandi sourced all the furnishings and fittings from her store; every single piece is available for purchase, including the cutlery.

Situated in the heart of Milan, Spazio Rossana Orlandi functions as an international interiors art gallery, bringing together works by artists as disparate as Piet Hein Eek from the Netherlands, Deborah Bowness from the UK, and Arik Levy from France. As owner Rossana Orlandi says, "The driving spirit behind Spazio Rossana Orlandi lies in the exploration and the discovery of all that is new and original in the world of interior design." Well worth a visit for Milan-bound design aficionadoes.

DIY: Maison Martin Margiela Bottle Lamps

Maison Martin Margiela's Line 13 White Objects Collection was all the rage at the Salone del Mobile in Milan last year. As with his fashion line, Margiela's high-concept home line is based on recycling and reinterpretation. We especially like the Line 13 collection of salvaged bottle lamps, with labels faded in ghostly white, which inspired us to round up the makings for a DIY project of your own.

N.B. To see what Margiela presented at the recent Maison et Objet 2010 in Paris, go to Design Boom.
