Ilse Crawford's London Flat Hits the Market

0
0

We're longtime admirers of Ilse Crawford's London flat, situated in the heart of Borough, which she designed in collaboration with Vincent Van Duysen and 6a Architects. Now it's for sale, and we're taking another look around (she's lived in the space for 15 years and it has evolved considerably over the years) and filing away ideas for the future. The pale gray/emerald green palette still looks fresh and there's an emphasis on comfort; a deep and engulfing sofa, a suite of mohair-upholstered Breuer dining chairs, and more clutter (in a good way) than you might expect.

Above: From San Francisco kitchen emporium March, the March Brass Menorah consists of nine individual candle holders and a matching tray made from silver plated polished brass, $2,500. The design is also available in Patinated Steel for $2,000 and Silver $3,200.

Ascalon Carrera Marble Menorah by Brad Ascalon for Design Within Reach | Remodelista

Above: The Ascalon Menorah with Candles is made from solid Carrara marble and has eight candleholders to correspond with the eight days of Hanukkah and one shamash (the candle used to light the others) on a different level. Left and right diagonals in the design create an 18-degree angle, which designer Brad Ascalon points out references the fact that in Judaism, the number 18 symbolizes chai or life. Available from Design Within Reach, it's $275 and includes 45 hand-dipped, 6-inch white candles.

Nick and the Candlestick by Lindsey Adelman | Remodelista

Above: The Nick and the Candlestick by Lindsey Adelman was inspired by antique brass weights and named after a Sylvia Plath poem. It has nine brass holders at varying heights that rest on a walnut tray; candles are inserted onto spikes, so they appear to float. The design is available from Matter for $1,905.

For a more traditional looking menorah, check out a perennial favorite: Josh Owen's Menorah for Areaware.

A Sympathetic Renovation in Stoke Newington, London

0

London-based interior designer Mark Lewis was given free rein to update a run-down Victorian terraced house in Stoke Newington—a house that hadn’t been touched since the 1950s. Rather than perform an overhaul gut renovation, Lewis’s surgery was of a gentle and less invasive nature. “Our solution was to carefully renovate by exposing and embracing any interesting architectural details while adding sympathetic and soulful elements such as textured joinery or interesting wall finishes,” he says. “We did not want to do anything that would particularly raise any eyebrows.” Come take the tour.

Photography by Rory Gardiner.

Gift Guide 2015: Charitable Gifts

After surviving a life-threatening illness, former Reebok designer Todd Saggese quit his day job, and along with lifelong friend T.J. Ennion, launched a lifestyle brand founded on two principles: that it is our job to live each day to the fullest, while at the same time helping others to do the same. Thus Nine Five Ltd. (Ltd. stands for "Live This Day") was born. As part of its mission, the company partners with dozens of charities to "Put a Lid" on issues from addiction to climate change to poverty and everything in between. Buyers choose the cause, and the company donates 20 percent of the proceeds.

After meeting Todd at our recent New England market, we asked him to help curate this year's list of gifts that give back.

Sackcloth and Ashes

In 2013, the issue of homeless became personal to Bob Dalton, when his single mother found herself living on the streets. Hoping to make a difference in the lives of the homeless population, he called shelters and asked what they needed most. They all requested blankets. And thus Sackcloth and Ashes was born. For every blanket you purchase, the company donates another to the homeless.

Above: Sackcloth and Ashes Tribal Blanket in Burgundy is made from a medium-weight wool blend; on sale for $79.

Feed

Founded by Lauren Bush Lauren, Feed makes products that seek to break the cycle of poverty and malnutrition in developing nations. Sprout

In response to what they saw as a throw-away culture, three MIT students founded a company "rooted in sustainability." The company's Sprout pencils, their first product, are made with sustainably harvested wood with clay/graphite "leads." But the best past is the end, which contains non-GMO, pesticide-free seeds. So when your pencil is used up, simply plant it! Colored and regular Sprout pencils comes in a variety of flowers, herbs and veggies.

Warby Parker

Ever lost an expensive pair of glasses? For one group of friends, the experience of having to go without while they saved up for another pair caused them to start a company with a simple mission: socially conscious, designer eyewear (including sunglasses and optical lenses) at affordable prices. By working with nonprofits such as VisionSpring, Warby Parker ensures that for every pair of glasses sold, another gets donated to the more than 15 billion worldwide who lack proper eyewear.

Kitchen of the Week: A Shaker-Inspired Kitchen in East Dulwich

Created for a design-conscious family in London's East Dulwich, the latest kitchen from deVol caters to a lot of tastes: Darkly elegant thanks to a palette of charcoal, black, and white, it's also designed for ease of use, classically homey (grab a seat at the breakfast counter), and seamlessly linked to an outdoor terrace and garden. Come take a look.

Above: Located in an extension of a newly remodeled Victorian, the kitchen pairs deVol's Real Shaker cabinets with counters of Carrara marble and Iroko wood and a subway-tiled backsplash. Casually displayed art adds an injection of life—go to our recent post New Gallery to see more art in the kitchen.

For contrast, they opted for the latter, fitted with deVol's Bella brass knobs and pulls (deVol sells its cabinets in modular units, but offers its paints and hardware only as part of complete kitchen designs).

Remodelista LA Market Spotlight: Mt. Washington Pottery

0

In anticipation of this weekend's Remodelista Holiday Market in LA, today we're spotlighting new vendor Beth Katz of Mt. Washington Pottery, best known for her handmade bells and talismans.

Detect a hippie vibe? Born into a creative family, Beth grew up in Topanga Canyon, Southern Cal's bohemian central, where from an early age she learned to make things from clay. While working for years as an in-demand LA makeup artist and magazine creative director, she kept up her pottery practice. A stint studying spiritual psychology in New Mexico pointed her in a new direction, and in 2014 she set up a professional studio and decided to devote herself to ceramics full time. Beth says a longstanding love of Japanese art, Scandi simplicity, and shades of white inform her work. And though she now lives in LA's Mt. Washington neighborhood, she's still clearly a Topanga artist at heart.

Los Angeles readers: Come see Beth's work firsthand at the Remodelista LA Holiday Market this Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, at Big Daddy's Antiques at 3334 La Cienega Place, near Culver City. Market hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Above: Inspired by good-luck strings of chiles and lemons Beth saw hanging on doors in India, she started making her own porcelain and stoneware versions that she calls Talismans. For display on a wall or door, they're intended to "keep homes and businesses safe from all evil spirits and promote happiness and prosperity."

We've doubled our hours: This year's LA holiday market at Big Daddy's Antiques is taking place this Saturday and Sunday. And more than 30 of our favorite California maker-designers and store creators are joining us, so it will be a one-stop shop for all the gifts on your list. Hope to see you there!

Here are the details and a preview of some of the highlights.

Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6 The Remodelista Market will be in residence at Big Daddy's Antiques at 3334 La Cienega Place near Culver City from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

A preview of the Remodelista Holiday Market 2015 in LA

Above: More than 30 local artisans will be showcasing their wares at Big Daddy's, including (clockwise from top left):

The MiA Project: A fashion and housewares shop and creative consultancy in LA devoted to celebrating the best of 100-percent made-in-America design—hence "MiA."

Brenden Ravenhill: Modern classics from an LA lighting and furniture designer who is a longstanding Remodelista favorite.

Wax Poster: Images by leading photographers printed in California on archival paper with fade-resistant ink.

Rule of Three: LA designer Paige Cleveland's hand-dyed textiles, including pillows and totes of marbled silk.

Baum-kuchen: An international couple's collection of Bauhaus meets wabi-sabi goods for the desktop and beyond.

Chapparal Studio: Crystals and minerals (fluorite mini pyramids shown here), terrariums, and full-moon-inspired jewelry from an LA design studio.

WelcomeCompanions: Miranda July– and Lena Dunham–endorsed surrealist leather bags by an upstart LA architect. The design here is the Bandage-Pill Cross Body, and we love the house-shaped carryall.

Ihako: Blue-accented everyday tableware made in Arita, Japan, by Yuta Miyazaki, a graphic designer who now works in porcelain.

The Citizenry: Thoughtfully designed fair-trade furniture and accessories from around the world, copper-framed Argentinian leather butterfly chair included.

Gift Guide 2015: For the Tech-Obsessed

0
0

I can appreciate a good gadget every once and a while. And this year there seem to be some extra-interesting devices to get stoked on. Do I have to go sit on Santa's lap to ask him for these, or would that be weird?

Sonos Plays speaker | Remodelista

Above: Here's one I went ahead and bought for myself recently. Sonos is an incredible home audio system that you can piece together depending on how much sound you need in your space. My wife and I? We're both DJs and we need a lot: In our small apartment, we have five Sonos pieces—three small speakers (in our son's bedroom, our bedroom, and the kitchen), plus a sound bar that sits under the TV and a sub, both in the living room.

They look nice enough (and other than the giant sub are fairly compact) and can be controlled by an app on your phone and computer. You can use your own music library, SoundCloud, Mixcloud, Amazon, Pandora, etc., and the system could not be more simple to operate. You can set it so all speakers are playing the same music or you can assign music (or TV sound) to specific speakers simply by checking a box on the app. Oh, and yes, the sound quality is impressive. A Sonos Two-Room Starter Set is $349.

Amazon Fire TV | Remodelista

Above: Has the time finally come to eliminate cable bills? Through Amazon Fire TV, you have access to tons of channels for free, as well as the ability to pay for some premium channels. The only reason I still have cable is to watch the Knicks lose. With Amazon Fire TV, I can get Netflix, Amazon, HBO GO, and more, and also watch and record live TV. And I'll only have to pay for channels I actually want. So I can still catch NBA games and the news, and hate-watch House Hunters on HGTV. A cool feature: You can also search using your voice, so you can say things such as "that movie with Bill Murray."

There are quite a few systems on the market right now, but this one makes the most sense for me and my family. If you're an Amazon Prime subscriber, you can access tons of movies, music, TV, and games for free. The Amazon Fire TV device also supports 4K Ultra HD for an extra-crispy picture (unlike its competitor Apple TV) and, at $99.99, it comes in at 50 percent less than Apple TV.

Ikea kitchen table with built-in smart phone charger | Remodelista

Above: Ikea has recently come up with a line of furniture and accessories with built-in phone chargers, including Riggad, a $79.99 desk lamp that I have my eye on: See it at Power to the People. Nice for either the desk or a bedside table, it has an adjustable head and arm, and can charge two devices since there's also a USB port.

Also on the horizon: In a workshop at Ikea's new Space10 ideas lab in Copenhagen, two grad student designers came up with Heat Harvest, a table (shown) that captures wasted heat from nearby object, such as coffeemakers and laptops, and converts it into reusable electricity. Soon we'll all be charging our phones wirelessly at our kitchen tables.

Revols custom fit wireless earphones | Remodelista

Above: I usually dislike earbuds because they never fit quite right; they fall out and don't seem to offer sound quality that compares with over-the-ear headphones. But I'm really interested in giving Revols Custom-Fit Wireless Earphones a try for $199. Funded via Kickstarter, they reached their initial goal in seven hours, so I'm clearly not the only one in line for these. Revols created an app that you use to get the gel to mold to your ear. The kit comes with two sets of buds just in case you share them with someone else. The app also gives you the ability to control outside noise similar to a musician's set of earplugs.

Stay-put charging cable from Native Union | Remodelista

Above: This is just a great simple idea: Native Union's Night Cable, $39.99, is a 10-foot-long, cloth-covered charging cord with a decorative knot that has a little weight to it, allowing you to put the cable down and have it stay in place. I look at my phone a ton while I lie in bed and this would be a great accessory—if only it could also prevent me from dropping my phone on my face while I'm reading.

Lucy, a robotic light that reflects natural sunlight | Remodelista

Above: Another design still in the preorder phase: Lucy is a lamp powered by solar energy that distributes natural light into your space. All you do is set her down in a naturally bright area during the day, and as the sun moves she follows while distributing sunny rays where you want them. I've lived in so many dark apartments where Lucy would be a godsend. She's also wind- and waterproof—and wire free—so she can be used outside.
