Shopper's Diary: Sawkille Co. Furniture & Fine Goods in Rhineback

0
0

We were pleased to learn recently that Jonah Meyer and Tara de Lisio, former owners of Serv ce Station, have collaborated with a group of artisans from the Catskills to form Sawkille Co. The venture includes Josh Vogel, a designer, sculptor, and co-founder of BDDW, and collaborators Mathew and Stuart Verilli of Prandoni Fabrication & Design. The group has coined the term Rural American Design to describe their approach, which "draws from the heritage in the Hudson Valley of people creating and working to build a life around what's meaningful."

The Sawkille Co. showroom opened in Rhinebeck in July, and, in addition to furniture, also showcases art, sculpture, and handiworks. Each piece is custom made in a selection of woods; prices are available upon request. Go to Sawkille Co. for more information.

Shopper's Diary: Atlantic on Nantucket

On a quick trip to Nantucket earlier this summer, Francesca and I discovered Atlantic, an antiques and vintage shop owned by longtime summer resident Colleen Darby Wurts. Over the winter, Wurts visits estate sales, auctions, and antiques fairs, amassing a collection of furniture, lighting, and accessories suitable for the summer home. We especially like her vintage chairs upholstered in fabrics from French designer Dominique Picquier. Atlantic is located at 10 Straight Wharf; 508-228-7776.

During the economic crisis of the 1930s, Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld designed furniture made from reclaimed crate wood packing material. In an eerily timed revival, the Rietveld Foundation came out with a line of flat pack crate chairs not too long ago. The adult-size Wilhelmina Collection Crate Chair is available in six colors (as well as natural wood with transparent varnish) at All Modern for $397.88, and the child-size Crate Chair Junior is available at Genius Jones for $282.95 (on sale from $415) in the same range of colors. Each chair is supplied with a chip, number, and matching certificate and is produced by the Rietveld Foundation.

Houseguests, anyone? We love this idea, spotted on Apartment Therapy: Artisan Shepherd's Huts. Paulus Smith has been a specialist joiner for over 25 years, working on listed and historic buildings. He now spends his time creating meticulously crafted shepherd's huts from his medieval barn workshop in Sussex; wheels are cast from molten iron using original patterns, floors are solid oak, and all fittings such as door handles and window fastenings are high-quality reproductions. Can be used as garden retreat, spare room, studio, or office. Prices start at about £11,000; go to Artisan Shepherd's Huts for more information.

Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: Five Leaves in Brooklyn

Designed by John and Kevin McCormick (of Freeman's and Beatrice Inn fame), Five Leaves in Greenpoint features a nautically themed interior and counts the late Heath Ledger among its investors. "The McCormicks are not exactly decorators or contractors, while they do both," according to a profile in the New York Observer.  "Rather, they are professional distressors: helping build restaurants and bars where each dust particle, creaky door hinge, dent, and scratch is applied with expert precision. Johnny rusts, oxidizes, and ages surfaces. Sometimes he uses chemicals to create aged-green copper; other times he attacks light fixtures, bar tops, and doors with nails, keys, or whatever else might be lying around. Kevin, meanwhile, is the wall and ceiling expert: applying layer upon layer of paint and plaster as well as candle wax, or motor oil if necessary, to get a weathered look."

Office Visit: MESH Architectures in Brooklyn

Eric Liftin is the founder of MESH Architectures in Brooklyn, a hybrid architectural practice that works in both the physical and virtual realms (the firm also designs websites). The majority of Mesh's domestic projects are renovations, and the practice makes a point of integrating the use of new materials into old structures without erasing the character and construction. "We work with a wide range of materials, and we are often inspired by the materials themselves," Lifton says. "Architecural ideas come out of a material's capabilities." Below are a few of MESH's favorite materials; see the firm's work at MESH Architectures.

Above: A selection of MESH Architectures' favorite materials.

Above: Butternut wood from Vermont Wildwoods, "a beautiful wood with a lot of character that is reasonably priced," according to Lifton.

Above: "Fireslate is a synthetic material made in Massachusetts with a pleasing cement-like appearance."

Above: "Flex-Strut is a system of steel channels and bolted fittings that you can fashion into wall dividers."

Above: "Cast-iron pipe fittings offer endless ideas for invention."

Above: "Panelite glasscloth is a fiberglass-dense thin resin panel system; we use it to create luminous walls."

Above: "We like natural linseed Forbo linoleum from Sweden, which comes in  a variety of colors and patterns."

Above: "Ipe is a super-dense wood that is beautiful and versatile and can be used in wet locations."

Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: Riad Dixneuf la Ksour in Marrakesh

Located near Bab Ksour, a few minutes from Djam El Fn'a Square in Marrakesh, the Riad Dixneuf la Ksor was designed by the same team behind the famous L'Heure Bleue in Essaoira. The French proprietors aimed to create a hotel that "marries traditional architecture and modernity;" among the details we admire: the marble bathrooms; the pool tiled in a mosaic of brown, black, white tiles; and the handmade furniture throughout the interior. Go to Riad Dixneuf la Ksor for more information.

Storage: Rustic Woven Basket Roundup

We've been fans of rustic rush-plaited baskets for a while now (see Walls, Windows & Floors: Rush Matters in Bedfordshire), a hearthside staple in English country houses. Until recently, they were hard to come by (and expensive), so we were pleased to notice several new sources for the baskets recently.

Walls, Windows & Floors: Les Indiennes Hand-Printed Wallpaper

Designer and stylist Mary Mulcahy launched her Les Indiennes line of hand-blocked fabrics in 2002, after her own dead-end search for simple repeating patterned fabrics. Mulcahy teamed up with Srinivas Pitchuka, an Indian artisan, and together they took traditional designs and simplified them by isolating single motifs and elegantly spacing them on a creamy white background, using the traditional Kalamkari method (and natural dyes and organic cotton). In recent years, Mulcahy has expanded her product line to include furniture, table linens, paper goods, small accessories, as well as wallpaper. The current collection of Les Indiennes IVM wallpaper includes limited-edition paper rolls that are hand-block-printed in natural indigo or chocolate brown on recycled cotton paper that's stitched together to form a long, vertical wall hanging. Measuring 20 inches wide by 10 feet long, the paper is $140 per roll at Les Indiennes online store. For more on Mulcahy's work, see Fabrics & Linens: Les Indiennes Ikat Prints, Furniture: Les Indiennes Colette Bed, and Fabric & Linens: New at Les Indiennes.
