Bath: Pharmacy Medicine Cabinet from Restoration Hardware

0
0

Anyone who has gone through a bath remodel knows how difficult it is to find an appealing built-in medicine cabinet; one of the best we've seen recently is Restoration Hardware's brushed Steel Pharmacy Medicine Cabinet, featuring a hand-welded frame, a mirrored interior, glass shelves, and zinc hardware.

DIY: Mirrored Bath by Tulp Designs in Munich

Spotted on Dezeen: A mirrored bathroom by German firm Tulp Design that plays on ideas of vanity (even the ceiling is covered in framed mirrors). While the mirrored bathroom is hardly a new idea, the mix of frames and shapes in this room—unified visually with a coat of white paint—keeps it fresh and distinctive.

Office Visit: Beast by Specht Harpman in Austin, Texas

While the live/work concept usually evokes images of home offices or backyard writing studios, Austin-based Specht Harpman Architects (members of the Remodelista Architects and Designers Directory) have inverted the idea with their design for the offices of Beast, a national media company. Located in a formerly decrepit single-story warehouse in downtown Austin, the Beast offices feel more like an urban loft space than a corporate satellite office. With the dining/conference room firmly located in the middle of a series of offices and editing suites, it becomes the heart of the company; supporting Beast's collaborative work environment. To see more of the firm's work, go to Specht Harpman Architects.

Shopper's Diary: Papabubble in New York

Halloween has us thinking of candy, which has us thinking about Papabubble, an edgy artisanal sweets shop on Broome Street in the southern fringes of Nolita. The tiny store is the lone American outpost of an inventive confectionery that originated in Barcelona in 1992 and now has a dozen branches around the world, including in Amsterdam, Brussels, Tokyo, and Moscow. In each, the candy is hand rolled, stretched, and sculpted in house, an elaborate process akin to making Venetian latticino glass and resulting in some of the world’s tastiest sweeties (we especially like the lime chili pepper flavor). N.B. Tomorrow we'll be featuring a Steal This Look on the Papabubble interior.

Tabletop: Old-Fashioned Fountain Straws

We're pretty pleased about the return of the old-fashioned cardboard drinking straw (especially now that it's popping up in colors like lime green, black, lime, hot pink, and turquoise). BHLD has a good selection of Spiraled Shoppe Straws, made in the US of biodegradable card stock; $6 for a pack of 25.

Spotted on Design by Proxy: an LA drinks party featuring a Crystal Head Vodka centerpiece. The skull motif may be a bit overdone, but something about this bottle appeals to us (and it's not because Dan Aykroyd is behind the vodka venture). It has more to do with the fact that it's made in Italy by Bruni Glass and can be repurposed as a candleholder or even as a vase. Crystal Head Vodka can be ordered from 877-Spirits' website for $89.

Fabrics & Linens: Les Squelettes Dish Towel by Bon Matin

Based in Dusseldorf, Germany, Bon Matin is a small collective of artists and designers that produces finely detailed screen prints. In addition to artwork, their output includes a charming dish towel called Les Squelettes (the Skeletons). Each skeleton is numbered, and all the skeletons are identified at the bottom of the dish towel—thus allowing it to double as an educational game. Bon Matin's collection can be viewed at Supermarket, a website where designers can present and sell their products.

DIY: Spray-Painted Ikea Foto Pendant Lamps

Another genius idea from IKEA's home inspiration blog Livet Hemma (alas, the posts are only in Swedish): Take inexpensive spun-aluminum Foto Lamps and give them a candy-colored coating. They come to bright life in colors like mint, lemon, and peach.

Foto Pendant Lamp

Above: Choose a spray paint that adheres to a metal surface; a low-VOC option is the 100-percent acrylic Krylon H2O Latex. To begin, wipe the lamp with a damp rag and let it dry. Cover the section of cord closest to the lamp with masking tape to protect it from paint. You will get a more even result if you spray on two thin layers of paint, but make sure to let the first coat dry before you reapply the second coat.

Though we're not quite ready to attempt our own boiled sugar concoctions, we’re longstanding fans of Papabubble's low-budget laboratory chic (see yesterday's Shopper's Diary: Papabubble in New York), which can easily be translated to the home kitchen.

The holiday season is looming, which means waves of guests descending, which means extra seating will be needed. Here's a good solution from West Elm; a collapsible table that can be stowed away when not in use and folding chairs that are appealing enough to be used every day.

Walls, Windows & Floors: RugCycle in Sweden

During a trip to Turkey, Swedish architects Jenny Askenfors and Sofia Ehrengren got a better appreciation of the labor-intensive process of rug-making as well as a glimpse into a new trend in which antique rugs are cut up to make patchwork rugs. Their admiration and respect for traditional craftsmanship led them to create RugCycle, a company whose goal is to repurpose antique rugs while keeping them intact. Their second collection, a collaboration with Linda Lindorff, is a homage to the Swedish rag rug; vintage rag rugs have been rescued and carefully stitched together. For more information and pricing, go to RugCycle.

Jamie Gray, the owner of forward-looking furniture store Matter in New York, branches into restaurants with the opening of Walden, located on a corner in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. In the interiors, Gray mixed traditional cafe furniture with contemporary lighting pieces by Lindsey Adelman and UK-based Michael Anastassiades, polished marble counters, and a simple, serene palette of black, gray, and white. For more information, go to Walden.

10 Easy Pieces: Built-In Refrigerators

Consider this: Most people purchase cars more frequently than they do refrigerators. So while a high-end refrigerator may seem like an extravagance, over time, it pays off. Here are our top picks based on personal experience, consumer ratings, reader comments, and recommendations from kitchen appliance specialty stores (for more options, see Undercounter Refrigerators and Appliances for Small Kitchens).

N.B.: While we've provided links to online retailers, note that several brands can only be sold in the state where the appliance will be installed. Visit the manufacturer's website to locate dealers in your area.

The latest models are Energy Star–rated and feature an airier interior with brighter lighting. The Sub-Zero BI-36U 36-Inch Built-In Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator is $9,249 through approved dealers.

Shopper's Diary: Spartan Opens in San Francisco

When we discovered recently that Currie Person, owner of the Austin, Texas-based shop Spartan, had opened an outpost in San Francisco, we immediately dashed over to check it out. Located in Valencia Bottoms, the fashionable and burgeoning stretch between 15th and Market streets, Spartan is part of a retail collective called The Voyager Shop, anchored by hipster clothing store Revolver and including the Mollusk Gear Shop and the Michael Rosenthal Art Gallery.

Spotted at Canoe, one of our favorite shops in Portland, Oregon, Jasper Morrison's smart-looking alarm clock for Swiss company Punkt. The small clock features a pleasing solidity, with a glass face set into an aluminum case; it's the thoughtful details, such as a full dial light in addition to luminescent hands, that make it a worthy bedside companion.
