10 Easy Pieces: Favorite Appliances for Small Kitchens

$

0

We've all heard stories about professional chefs and cookbook writers working out of small apartment kitchens with just the essentials—a range, a refrigerator, a dishwasher—all within arm's reach. Here are our top picks (in a range of prices) to outfit a kitchen when space is tight. For more ideas on the theme, see Steal This Look: Instant Camp-Style Kitchen).

N.B. Remodelista readers: send us your experiences with small-space appliances; we'd love to hear your ideas.

COOKING

Above: Our top range pick is the narrow Viking 24-Inch Pro-Style Gas Range with Four Open Burners; $3,539 at AJ Madison in black, white, or stainless (also available in custom colors for $3,889).

Above: If you are limited to electric and tight on space, the super-compact Haier 20-Inch Electric Range HER203QABS is a good stainless option and costs around $500. Go to Haier for dealer location.

Above: The ultra-compact, 12-inch Miele Double Combiset Gas Cooktop with stainless steel control knob, sealed burners, electric spark ignition, and cast iron grate is $949 at AJ Madison.

Above: No space for a wall oven? Consider the Cuisinart BRK-100 Brick Oven Classic; $129.95 at Amazon.

Above: The smallest wall-mount over-the-range microwave we've found is the 22-inch (30-inch is standard) LG LMV1314 Microwave; $279 at AJ Madison.

CLEANING

Above: Bosch dishwashers consistently receive the highest ratings from consumer magazines; the 18-inch-wide Bosch front-loading Integra Series is available with a stainless steel front or custom panel ready; $918 at AJ Madison.

Above: When space is tight, the Fisher & Paykel DD24S Single Dish Drawer is a good choice; it can accommodate larger items such as pots and pans and measures 23 7/16 inches wide and 16 3/32 inches tall (an 18-inch-high model is also available); $599 at AJ Madison.

REFRIGERATION

Above: New York City-based appliance company Summit has been specializing in compact refrigerators and freezers for commercial and special use since 1969. More recently, they've been expanding their range of household appliances to focus on apartment-sized products. The Summit FFBF285SS 24-Inch Stainless Steel Refrigerator is $1,289 at AJ Madison.

Above: I've had great experience with Liebherr refrigerators; the company offers several sleek compact refrigerators for smaller kitchens that are cabinet depth (in fact, they're the only freestanding cabinet-depth refrigerators on the market). Consider the freestanding, 80-inch-high, 24-inch-wide CS 1311 Refrigerator; $2,249 at AJ Madison.

Sanyo SR-3770S Counter-High Refrigerator at Remodelista

Above: For spaces that can't accommodate a tall refrigerator, consider the Sanyo SR-3770S Counter-High Refrigerator, which features a stainless-steel door and a black worktop; $199.99 at Amazon.

On a recent visit to the newly opened Bar Agricole in San Francisco, I couldn't help but notice the sleek, silver-plated Hercules French cocktail shakers from the collection of bartender/owner Thad Vogel. While we couldn't turn up an exact equivalent online, we were delighted to find a source for a similar shaker at an affordable price, thanks to a tip from a Remodelista reader.

Always a good idea: linen teatowls as curtains. Here's a roundup of some recently admired installations.

Tabletop: Orskov Glassware from Denmark

Discovered via Stephen Drucker, former editor of House Beautiful and newly appointed editor of Town & Country: Orskov Glassware from Denmark, which Drucker calls his "favorite all-purpose glass." Made of heat-resistant borosilicate (laboratory glass), the delicate glasses are deceptively durable and are microwave and dishwasher proof, and unlike most glassware, the base is perpendicular to the walls. Orskov Glassware has been a staple at Peter Miller Books in Seattle for 15 years (Miller first admired the glasses on a trip to Copenhagen) and is also available at the General Home Store in East Hampton.

Above: Orskov Glasses are available in seven sizes; the largest is 6 inches tall, and the smallest is 2.5 inches tall; prices start at $5 for the mini size (perfect for red wine) at Peter Miller Books in Seattle.

We've admired the use of reclaimed architectural salvage accessories (see Design Sleuth: Recessed Soap Niche) in the bathroom; if you can't find an appropriate vintage product, consider the Graystone Accessory Collection at Subway Ceramics. The collection features reproductions of original ceramic bathroom accessories from the Graystone Manor in Perrysburg, Ohio, that was demolished in 2008. Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam

Here's an example of creative reuse: the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam, a monumental 1921 structure that originally served as a waystation for emigrants leaving Europe, then as a penitentiary for minors; in its current incarnation it's a cutting-edge concept hotel. Centrally located in the heart of the city’s Eastern Docklands area, the building was overhauled by Rotterdam-based firm MVRDV. A high-profile group of Dutch architects, designers, and artists (Claudy Jongstra, Hella Jongerius, Marcel Wanders, and Richard Hutten, to name a few) have transformed the interior into a design mecca. The 117 rooms are divided into several levels of luxury and defy categorization. Some are rustic, some are austere, some are designed for large groups. Go to the Lloyd Hotel for more information.

Bedroom: Carpe Diem Beds from Sweden

Whenever Juli and John of Kitka Design in Toronto make a design pronouncement or a product endorsement, we take note. Their favorite new purchase? A bed from Swedish company Carpe Diem. Here's what Juli and John say:

"Never. Slept. Better. We are shocked at how different this bed is from all previous experiences. We love its simplicity (no need to buy a frame and headboard) and the fact that Carpe Diem uses only natural materials (it has the Swan Eco-Label  Certification). The pine used in the base is from sustainable forests in the northernmost part of Sweden, and the tongue-and-groove corner construction means no glue or nails are used.

"We love that Carpe Diem beds are customizable; you can pick from five fabric choices (we picked light gray) and 11 types of legs (we picked birch). We went for the basic Koster model but upgraded the top mattress to the Exclusive, which has a cotton-filled summer side and a wool-filled winter side. Finally, we love that it has a 25-year warranty."

For dealer information, go to Carpe Diem.

Pasadena-based Michaela Scherrer brings 30 years of experience to the practice of interior design; a graduate of FIDM in Los Angeles, she opened her own firm at the age of 22. Her spaces are serene and infused with ideas she picks up on her frequent travels. "As our society becomes increasingly technological, we need to create a balance and a sense of tranquillity," she says. To see more of her Zen-like work, go to Michaela Scherrer.

Italian architect Sabrina Bignami, the founder of B-Arch Studio in Prato, Italy, just outside of Florence, is most noted for the renovation of her own home, Casa Orlandi, an 18th-century palazzo, where she skillfully incorporates modern furnishings within a formal, classical interior. Her renovation of Caterina House in Florence draws on those same skills, juxtaposing the modern with the traditional. In a recent interview with Yatzer, Bignami says, "The Italians are great at ancient and they're great at modern interior design—but they are not so hot at mixing the two." Bignami is proving the exception.

Discovered at this weekend's SF 20th Century Modernism Show: the work of Sam Orlando Miller, an artist and designer who was born in London, sells his work at San Francisco's Hedge Gallery, and lives between London and an ancient house in the Le Marche region of Italy ("surrounded by twenty acres of wild woodland on a remote hillside," according to his wife, photographer, writer, and renaissance woman Helen Miller).

While Sam occupies himself with design and salvage projects, Helen operates a property consultancy (Miller Houses) and writes about life in Le Marche and the couple's idyllic-sounding existence (read her work at World of Interiors). Photographs by Helen Miller.

The trio creates made-to-order pillows, throws, and other items for the home using unexpected materials—high-quality men's woolen suiting fabrics, for instance, and reclaimed army blankets.
