Steal This Look: Minimalist DIY Entryway

$

I live in a smallish apartment in San Francisco, so when I spotted this clever coat rack/organizer on Design Sponge my DIY ambitions were ignited.

The entryway in question is located in the rental apartment of Seattle-based textile artist Ashley Rose Helvey, which she shares with Miles Pederson. Helvey and Pederson created the entryway system by putting up a dowel rod for hanging coats. Below it is a bench made with two wooden stools, which were discards from Helvey's work studio. For a tour of the apartment, go to Design Sponge.

Stockholm-based design studio Form Us with Love has created yet another appealing light fixture (their last hit was the strangely compelling Unfold Pendant for Muuto). This time it's the Form Pendants made for Design House Stockholm; luckily, they are now available in the US and are priced well within reach.

Enough with Downton Abbey: Portuguese designer Diogo Frias updates the gentleman's valet so that even those of us pressed for space can integrate an Old World ritual into our daily lives.

Combining his two degrees in product and industrial design, Porto-based Frias works with the production process, creating viable products that “somehow have the ability to induce well being in users, causing them to smile,” he says.

Above: Frias developed the Andy with Portuguese furniture maker Wegood. For more information, go to Diogo Frias.

Last week we asked readers to submit pinboards titled "Marvin Best in Glass" featuring windows and doors for a chance to win a Thanksgiving serving set from Heath Ceramics, courtesy of our friends at Marvin Windows and Doors.

The serving set, a $400 value, includes a pitcher, bowl, dish, and serving platter in a color of the winner's choice (colors currently out of stock are not an available option). The winner of the Heath Ceramics set is Yedda Morrison whose pinboard took us from Japanese architecture to restaurant windows to Air BnB lofts.

Thank you to all our readers who submitted such thoughtful pinboards; see links to the 60 entries in the comments section below Pin to Win: Heath Ceramics Serving Set from Marvin Windows. Below are a few of our favorite images from Yedda's pinboard.

A Classic Mop with a Twist of Color

The multi-colored Wool Dry Mop is not an infomercial super-mop; just an iconic design made from materials sourced and assembled in the US from 1909 Vermont-based Slack Dust Mop Company.

The company's inception began with Alexander P. Slack's makeshift mop from a piece of coiled copper wire and stacked cotton rags. Today the business is carried by grandson Thomas G. Slack II who sources colored wool carpet remnants from South Carolina and Georgia and recycled poplar wood that is hand-lacquered to enhance the material. The wool itself inherently attracts dust and holds on to it with its naturally occurring lanolin.

A Renaissance Man Designs a Lamp

Drummer, artist, and bartender David Kitz can now add lamp designer to his resume.

The Venice, LA-based artist came up with the prototype in a ceramics class while at art school. After having taken so many fine art classes, "I was excited to design something utilitarian," Kitz says. "The L-Lamp showcases the aesthetic qualities of the industrial parts being used: the lightbulb, the cloth cord, the plugs, and the rotary switches. Whereas many lamps are designed to conceal their mounting apparatuses, sockets, and lightbulbs through the use of lamp shades and casings, the L-Lamp puts these parts on full display." Handmade in Los Angeles, the L Lamp contains a carbon filament light bulb and porcelain socket mounted on handmade ceramic base. To learn more, go to David Kitz Design Co.

We first posted about Atomic Garden after it opened in 2008; today the Oakland store is a regular haunt for those seeking well-crafted children's goods, time-honored products like Reiss enamelware, Redecker brushes, Fog Linen Work fabrics, and wares from Dosa.

Co-owners Adrienne Armstrong (she's married to Billy Joe of Green Day) and Jamie Kidson met on the soccer field sidelines while their children played a match. After a few games, the two struck up a friendship that would later turn into a business partnership with the opening of Atomic Garden. For more, visit Atomic Garden online.

Rehab Diaries: A Notting Hill Kitchen Extension, Natural Light Included

$

London architect Johnny Holland believes that the key to a successful project is a clear brief from the client. But what if the client insists that the entire back wall of the house be removed?

A creative couple in Notting Hill asked Hackett Holland (a member of the Remodelista Architect/Designer Directory) to extend and transform their “dark and pokey” kitchen into a simple, functional space with abundant natural light and clean lines. Undaunted by their mandate to remove the entire rear wall (including structure) in order to provide the widest opening possible for a glazed door system, Holland called on the services of structural engineer Nick Maclean, who “rose to the challenge without complaint” and designed a beam that would span the full width of the house while supporting the bedroom above. “The result is a seamless transition between the kitchen wall surface and garden wall outside,” says Holland, “all painted in white to complete the effect.”

Photography by Simon Bevan.

Remodelista-Hackett-Holland-Notting-Hill-kitchen-extension

Above: "At ground floor level we extended the kitchen space into the side yard," Holland says. "The footprint of the original yard is reflected in a single large strip of frameless glazing, almost flat, flooding the space with natural light." The effect of the frameless glazing is that the garden wall extends continuously from the kitchen interior beyond the glazed door system.

Remodelista-Hackett-Holland-Notting-Hill-kitchen-extension

Above: "We were able to introduce a builder who was capable of the high level of finish and attention to detail required for a scheme of this nature," says Holland. "When it comes to what might be broadly described as ‘minimalism,’ every detail assumes significance."

Remodelista-Hackett-Holland-Notting-Hill-kitchen-extension

Above: "Every event is noticed: whether the junction between a wall and floor, the exact alignment of cupboard doors, the mitered corners on a shadow gap detail," says Holland. "There is no room for error. ‘Less’ really does become ‘more,’ as precision is everything."

Remodelista-Hackett-Holland-Notting-Hill-kitchen-extension

Above: "The whiteness of the bespoke kitchen units was matched by a pure white Corian work surface and Corian shelves," Holland says. "There is no conventional back splash: An acrylic sealer has been applied to the paint work, which will require refreshing periodically, subject to damage."

Remodelista-Hackett-Holland-Notting-Hill-kitchen-extension

Above: The glass is supported in metal channels recessed into the wall above and sealed with structural silicone.

Remodelista-Hackett-Holland-Notting-Hill-kitchen-extension

Above: "Lighting is consciously simple. A row of recessed down-lighters illuminates the kitchen counter; a pendant glows softly above the kitchen table; and the bookshelves are illuminated by white spotlights mounted on the roof light return wall opposite," says Holland. "A discrete floor box below the kitchen table provides power and a data connection for laptop use, avoiding the hazard of draping cables across routes around the room."

Remodelista-Hackett-Holland-Notting-Hill-kitchen-extension

Above: "At ground floor level, natural oak was selected for the floor finish throughout, which unifies the spaces seamlessly," Holland says. "As always, there was some debate about the use of timber boards in the kitchen: water damage, spaghetti in the cracks, grit from the garden, and general wear and tear were all debated. Conversely, this was a case where the client persuaded the architect that timber would be all right."

Remodelista-Hackett-Holland-Notting-Hill-kitchen-extension

Above: Creating the largest possible opening meant removing any existing supporting masonry and the newly inserted beam had to be supported on the shared (with neighbors) Party Wall. "This presented the additional headache for Nick, who had to ensure that the Party Wall would accept the hugely increased load without cracking—particularly on the neighbors; side," Holland says.
