Finally: A design-worthy light specifically created to be used with low-energy light bulbs.

Danish industrial designer Ceclie Manz, maker of the celebrated Caravaggio pendant light (I have one in my dining room), has just come up with a simple pendant for low-energy bulbs; the pendant is capped with a flat translucent acrylic top, which allows for additional illumination.

Above: Made from lacquered aluminum, the Mingus Pendant Light comes in six colors and is available in two sizes: €235 for a small and €410 for a large at the Finnish Design Shop.

DIY: Black Floral Arrangements

Two options for creating a moody Halloween ambience with black blooms, created by two of our favorite florists: Torryne Choate of Birch in San Francisco and Te Dinh Sy of The Willow in Shoreditch in the UK.

According to Sy, "There is something darkly romantic about a black rose, something wicked." To create the desired noirish effect, consider spray painting roses or creating imposters using black crepe paper.

Above: "We recently had to prepare some displays for a thirtieth birthday party and the client wanted black roses," Te Dinh Sy says. "Pure black roses are impossible to get, so with a few spray cans, off we went. There is something odd about the process—spraying a beautiful fresh rosebud black—but the results are undeniably beautiful. The new artificial flower: an urban bloom."

Above: A mix of spray-painted roses and fresh blooms.

Above: In San Francisco, Torryne Choate of Birch created a floral arrangement for Alexis Swanson Traina of Swanson Vineyards, using black paper flowers. Country Living has a video with instructions on how to make crepe paper flowers.

When Zeb Stewart dreamed up the Hotel Delmano in Brooklyn, he was aiming "for a place that evoked Havana or Paris." We think he succeeded.

Located within a boarded-up storefront (you enter via a side door), the cocktail lounge is done up in high-speakeasy style; distressed painted walls and ceilings, a long, curved marble bar, burnished brass fixtures and fittings, lazy ceiling fans. For more information, go to Hotel Delmano.

Steal This Look: Stealth Glamor in Stockholm

In the heart of Stockholm's Sodermalm neighborhood lies the moody apartment of illustrator Mats Gustafson, located in a late-19th-century building. Gustafson renovated the flat with friends Neil Logan and Solveig Fernlund (of Fernlund + Logan), who emphasized the play of shadows against the stark white walls.

We especially admire the muted kitchen, antiques collection, and art objects on view throughout the living spaces; all reminiscent of an Ingmar Bergman set. For a similar look, we source some of the key elements in each room below.

Shelter from the Storm: A Weather-Proof Cottage in New Zealand

A Frankenstorm-proof cottage, located on the east coast of Great Barrier Island in New Zealand, can be completely sealed off from the elements when not in use.

Clad in black rough-sawn timber, the 1,000-square-foot structure looks north to the sea; the dark exterior palette is completed with a layer of perforated metal screens, which can be closed when the cottage is not occupied. According to Fearon Hay Architects, "This is a retreat that provides shelter, warmth, and comfort to engage with the wilderness and isolation of the remote setting."

SPONSORED POST

We're delighted to launch our new video series, "Remodelista in Conversation with Design Innovators," featuring some of the most exciting design luminaries (architects, interior designers, artisans) working today. First up: Lauren Geremia of Geremia Design in Emeryville, CA, the visionary behind some of the Bay Area's most innovative, edgiest spaces. Join us as we sit down for coffee with Geremia, courtesy of our friends at Starbucks.

Geremia studied painting at RISD before segueing into interior design (she got her start decorating bars and restaurants on a budget), and her inventive approach got her noticed by the local tech community. Her clients include some of the Bay Area's most happening companies—think Dropbox and Instagram—and she's done domestic interiors for leading tech innovatives as well. What's she excited about? New frontiers in LED lighting, for one (watch our video to find out why). And let us know what design innovations you're excited about; we'd love to hear from our reader on this topic.

A Designer's Haunt in Greenwich Village

We recently dropped in on designer Lorraine Kirke (she's the matriarch of a family that includes husband Simon Kirke, the legendary Bad Company drummer, and daughter Jemima Kirke of Girls). Kirke's special talent is creating idiosyncratic mashup worlds wherever she happens to touch down—New York, London, Miami, and Long Island. Even the name of her New York-based clothing line Geminola is a mashup; merging the names of her children, Greg, Jemima, Domino, and Lola.

From vintage markets to eBay, nothing is out of bounds for Kirke; when she travels, she trawls tirelessly for inspiration. The result? A fashion line created from recycled and reworked one-of-a-kind pieces; never seen before and definitely not to be found anywhere else. When her creative daughters Jemima (portraitist and accidental Girls star), Domino (singer and doula), and Lola (actress) need a frock to wear to a big event, Geminola is their first stop.

Strange but True: Paw Print Tiles from the UK

The day that ceramicist Helena Seget’s pet rat skittered across a work in progress was a fortuitous one.

Fascinated by the organic design created from the accidental pattern of the scurrying paw prints, Seget realized that she had an indelible memory of her beloved pet. After she installed the tiles in her bathroom, she strangely never felt alone in that room again; to be forever inhabited by her rat’s “genius."

For the past couple of years I've been addicted to black taper candles, especially effective when used in candelabras (or in groupings) to add an edgy note to a table setting and especially relevant for Halloween.

5 Favorites: Tombstones as Art, Halloween Edition

A few years ago, I made a pilgrimage to the grave of Nico, the Velvet Underground singer and collaborator, in the depths of the Friedhof Grunewald Forest in Berlin. My friend and I both took a rubbing of her tombstone that read simply: "Nico, Christa Päffgen 1938-1988." We did the same at Jim Morrison's grave in Paris; today our interests and rockstar obsessions have evolved, but we'll always have the macabre prints to remind us. Here are five ways to use grave rubbings—and even tombstones—as art.

Duncan Hannah at Modernism in San Francisco

Thursday evening, November 1st, we'll be celebrating NYC painter Duncan Hannah's new show, "The Infatuationist," at Modernism in San Francisco. Will we see you there?

We've admired Hannah's work for a while now (see A Painter at Home: Duncan Hannah in New York). Hannah lives much of his life in the past, riveted by the possibilities of exploring a vanished world—an imagined England, perhaps, recovering from the First World War and not yet able to comprehend a Second. His work captures that moment of possibility that occurs just as a good story gets underway: the ship setting sail, sunlight gleaming on a roadster's fender, the girl who waits for you in a doorway. See more of his work at Duncan Hannah.
