Fabrics & Linens: Olatz in New York

0
0

Located in the far West Village, Olatz is the creation of Spanish native Olatz Schnabel. Done up to look like a Cuban pharmacy—black and white marble checkerboard floor, mint-green walls, a grand service counter—the interior features brocade sofas and imposing beds; it all adds up to an air of Old World dishevelment. Ceiling-high shelves are stacked with brightly bordered and exquisitely embroidered sheets of fine linen or Egyptian cotton percale; all designed by Schnabel and made in Italy or hand-embroidered in Portugal exclusively for the store. Lace and batiste cotton crib sets, sumptuous silk pajamas, finely woven tablecloths, and feather-light cashmere blankets all seem to hold the promise that your own home could look as grand and film noir-y as the evocative shop itself.

N.B. To see the sheets in situ, go to Architect Visit: Made LLC for Julianne Moore (she's a fan of the bedding).

Office Visit: John Maniscalco Architecture in San Francisco

San Francisco architect John Maniscalco is a master at bringing natural light into the interiors of homes that are narrow or confined by small lot sizes, using windows, mirrors, and skylights to create a sense of openness. Before starting his own practice, Maniscalco (a Cornell graduate) worked in the offices of Gensler, among other firms. His goal is to "produce architecture that is responsive, honest, and well crafted. We focus on the fundamental elements of architecture: quality materials, careful consideration of space and light, and clarity of design from concept to detailing."

To see more of the firm's work, go to John Maniscalco Architecture.

Parnassus Stairwell

Above: Maniscalco reorganized this Parnassus residence "around a unifying vertical stair core, backed by a wall of glass, flooding all floors with light while providing a vertical spatial connection for the entire house."

Cube House Residence Stairs

Above: In the San Francisco Cube house, Maniscalco created a two-story atrium, open to the sky, which "allows all areas of the house to partake of the light, air, and landscape (both earth and sky) that this protected garden provides."

Australian interiors stylist Lyn Gardener is know for her shop Empire Vintage, an emporium of hand-picked vintage finds and treasures for the home located in Albert Park, a suburb of Melbourne. Gardener's talents are on full display in her renovation of this 1850's miner's cottage in Daylesford, a spa town and bolt-hole that's a 90-minute drive from Melbourne. Gardener describes her style as "vintage, rustic, and a little industrial," mixing all three in her overhaul of The White House. For those lucky enough to live in the antipodes, the holiday cottage is available to rent; go to Mr. & Mrs. Smith for booking information. All photography by Tim James.

Shopper's Diary: Natural History in Oxford

A new entry to the online retail scene: Natural History in Oxford, launched in summer 2010. Founded by Sarah Lidwell-Durnin, who describes herself as "an Irish girl living in Oxford (via Marrakesh and Paris), who left a Ph.D. in 15th-century poetry to pursue her passion for combining the whimsical with the decadently practical." There's a lot to like about her first round of offerings; starting with her line of accessories imprinted with original illustrations by famed 18th-century Irish naturalist and marine biologist John Ellis.

Above: The Blue Coral Linen Wall Hanging is printed on Irish linen and measures 114 by 114 cm; £250.

Above L to R: Strange and Scintillating Seaweed (Gelidum) and Strange and Scintillating Seaweed (Fucus). Both pillows measure 43 by 43 cm and are printed on Irish linen in Scotland; £80 each.

Steal This Look: Sarah Jessica Parker's Bath on Long Island

A while back I took note of Sarah Jessica Parker's bath in the Hamptons, designed by Eric Hughes, which appeared in Elle Decor and features an appealing mix of blue and white elements. For ideas on recreating the look, consider the components shown below.

N.B. For a look at her kitchen, see Steal This Look: Sarah Jessica Parker's Kitchen.

Photograph by William Waldron for Elle Decor.

Above L: The fixture in Parker's bathroom is the Oliver Sconce from Urban Archaeology; $315 in polished chrome. Above R: A more affordable option is the Winthrop Sconce; $75 as shown from Schoolhouse Electric.

Above: The Framed Lit Inset Medicine Cabinet (available with left- or right-facing door) is $645 for the small (16.25 inches wide by 26.25 inches high) and $745 for the large (21.25 inches wide by 34 inches high) at Restoration Hardware and is available in polished chrome, polished nickel, and satin nickel finishes. In Parker's bath, Eric Hughes used the Lenox Medicine Cabinet in polished chrome; $3,180 at Urban Archaeology.

Above: The American Standard Roxalyn Wall-Hung Vitreous China Sink with 8-inch centers (other configurations available) measures 18 by 20 inches; $129.34 at eFaucets.

Above: Clear Apothecary Jars with straight sides and stainless steel lids; $6.99 to $8.99 at the Container Store.

Above: We like the vintage look of the Handcrafted Raw Steel Metal Side Cabinet, featuring a single drawer, an exposed shelf, and a glass door. Designed and assembled in the US, it's $695 at Empiric Studio. Add a coat of blue paint to achieve a similar finish to the cabinet shown in Parker's bath with metal-appropriate spray paint, such as Rust-Oleum's Painter's Touch Spray ($6.99 at Amazon) in Caribbean Blue. Vintage stainless-steel cabinets and medical carts can be found at Urban Remains (Chicago); Twenty Gauge (Los Angeles).

Above L: Seamless, hygienic food-grade stainless Steel Buckets with reinforced bottoms make sturdy and attractive wastebaskets. The 12.5-inch-tall Stainless Steel Pail is $88.82 at Jonken Stainless Steel Pails. For our UK readers, Manufactum carries a 28.5cm-tall Stainless Steel Bucket (above R) for £60.90.

Washington, DC-based designer Darryl Carter is known for guiding clients to the perfect neutral shades (see Palette & Paints: Darryl Carter's Favorite Whites); now he's gone a step further with an endorsed line of paint colors from Benjamin Moore. Carter, a longstanding fan of Benjamin Moore paints ("Who else offers over two hundred shades of white?" he says. "It's a marriage made in heaven"), has selected his favorite go-to colors, a collection of neutrals that offers complementing color gradation and progression. As an added bonus, the colors, anticipated to be released this fall, are available in Benjamin Moore's low-VOC, waterborne, nearly odorless Natura formulation.

Shopper's Diary: Big Daddy's Opens in San Francisco

Bay Area collectors take note: LA-based Big Daddy's, long a secret source for Los Angeles set designers, who regularly plunder its cache of industrial and natural curiosities, recently opened a warehouse in SF's Potrero Hill neighborhood.  Owner Shane Brown (nicknamed "Big Daddy" as a child) refurbished a former shipbuilding factory to house his latest venture, where he showcases his ever-changing collection of large-scale architectural salvage paired with casegoods and upholstery. I wandered in last week and promptly felt the urge to buy an industrial light. Big Daddy's is located at 1550 17th Street (enter on Wisconsin).
