Hotels, Lodging & Restaurants: The Peacock at Rowsley in England

Built in 1652 and featuring original Elizabethean leaded windows and a stone carved peacock over the entryway, the Peacock at Rowsley was a Peak District fishing lodge in a former life. A few years ago, the property was overhauled by Lord Edward Manners (who presides over nearby Haddon Hall, an 800-year-old crenellated estate in the Derbyshire Dales) as a boutique hotel with 16 ensuite bedrooms. Manners enlisted Paris-based architect India Mahdavi to inject a note of modernity in the interiors; among her design flourishes: armchairs covered in Ralph Lauren tweeds, wing chairs in purple and orange velvets, and accent walls painted in acid green—with modern tartans thrown into the mix. Go to the Peacock at Rowsley for more information and to book.
