House Call: Eva and Gentry Dayton in Brooklyn

Eva Dayton has spent most of her career focusing on fashion; she spent several years at Armani before opening her own boutique, Butter, on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. She renamed the shop Eva Gentry when she began working with her husband and collaborator, Gentry Dayton; together they have also begun to work designing interiors. With Eva's predilection for well-edited black and white minimalism (the store is stocked with pieces by Helmut Lang, Rick Owens, and Martin Margiela, among others) mixed with Gentry's Harley Davidson motorcycle chic aesthetic, it adds up to what Eva calls "tough minimalism." The duo has completed several interior design jobs, including the Helmut Lang showroom in New York, as well as their own Brooklyn apartment, which was has been featured in UK Elle Decoration and RUM. To see more of their work, visit Eva Gentry.

Design Sleuth: Cast Iron Cookware from Lodge

Spotted in Eva and Gentry Dayton's Brooklyn kitchen: cast iron cookware from Lodge, a company located in the hills of Tennessee that began making cookware during the first presidential term of William McKinley. Lodge remains a family-owned, family-operated business and continues to produce a wide range of cast iron goods, including classic cookware favored by chefs everywhere (see Mark Bittman's piece in the NY Times, "Ever So Humble, Cast Iron Outshines the Fancy Pans").

According to Bittman, the virtues of cast iron are many: it's dramatically less expensive than stainless or copper; it's nearly as nonstick as any manufactured nonstick surface; it's an even distributor of heat and can move from stove top to oven; and it's easy to season (coat the interior with oil and put it in the oven for an hour).

Applicances: Fratelli Onofri Ranges from Italy

A reader from Boston clued us in to a well-priced line of ranges from Italian company Fratelli Onofri, which was founded in the fifties by two brothers. Here's her account:

"My five-burner, 36-inch dual fuel Fratelli Onofri is my favorite part of our new house. I love the cooktop; the cast iron is very heavy, and I am in love with the 12,000-BTU center triple ring burner (I can boil water in practically seconds). The oven is also incredible; the dinners I make are markedly, shockingly better. The Fratelli is also shockingly gorgeous for the price—every person we've had over falls in love with it—and easily looks like it costs twice as much as it did. The only small downsides: the oven is manual clean (but that's standard for the industry). Also, I don't love the small storage section under the oven; it's small and feels like it might break with a ton of use, so I don't use it."

N.B.: If you have a favorite appliance or product you think we should know about, please drop us a line at Remodelista.

Steal This Look: Traditional English Laundry Room

We like the old-world domesticity of this British laundry room spotted on Light Locations (in particular, the sink balanced on two piles of bricks and wedged between two tables). Use the elements below to recreate a similar look.

Above: Fireclay sinks were, at one time, very much a mainstay of the British home. The Belle Foret F3 Kit Fireclay Sink is $408 from Every Faucet.

Above: A traditional British laundry typically features an overhead drying rack (to take advantage of warm air rising). The Supreme Six Lath Ceiling Airer from Kitchen Maid comes with a selection of lathes and pulleys and is $204.16 at Urban Clotheslines.

Above: Wooden tables are ideal for folding laundry; consider the Goran table from Ikea, which features a birch plywood top, solid aspen and alder legs, and galvanized steel components. The table measures 59 inches long, 28.75 inches wide, and 28 inches high and is $49.99 at Ikea.

Above: For the domestically challenged, consider creating table-skirt curtains using VIvan Curtains from Ikea for $14.99, which can be cut to size and hemmed with the included iron-on strip.

Above: To hang the curtains, use Net Curtain Wire and hooks to attach. The Integra wire shown above comes in six standard lengths from 76cm to 274cm and includes two hooks and two eyes; prices start at £1.25.

Above: Made by Dandux, which has been supplying hotels, restaurants, and the US government since 1918, steel and heavy-duty canvas Laundry Carts from Restoration Hardware start at $129 for the smallest size.

Above: Add a rustic note with a Vintage Bottle Holder; $70 at Etsy.

Noticed recently: clothespin light fixtures (in Jamin Puech's Paris shop and at 15th Avenue Coffee & Tea in Seattle); we think they'd be equally at home in the domestic laundry room.

Kitchen: Mason Cash Mixing Bowls

The Mason Cash Mixing Bowl has long been a mainstay of the British kitchen, and it appears that this time-tested classic is enjoying a renaissance (Brit cooks Nigella Lawson and High Fearnley Whittingstall are fans). Mason Cash has been making pottery since the 1800s, and the cane color of the bowls comes from the original clay used in the production. The bowls have a pleasing heft, which makes them well suited for vigorous mixing. Interesting sidenote: The smaller pudding bowl, shown below, is used by the royal household (Queen Elizabeth II gives Christmas pudding gifts to "hundreds of her loyal subjects, family, and friends," according to Mason Cash).

Shopper's Diary: Hostem in London by JamesPlumb

$

On a recent visit to London, I stumbled across Hostem, an edgy men's clothing store located on Redchurch Street in the ever-evolving neighborhood of Shoreditch. The interior was orchestrated by Britain's latest design prodigies, Hannah Plumb and James Russell, who go by the name JamesPlumb and "work with the overlooked and the discarded, taking time-worn antiques and cast-offs to produce one-off assemblages, luminaires, and interiors." The duo layers Dickensian grittiness with the romance of the British poets Keats and Shelley; in the Hostem interiors, they repurposed a vintage church pew as a shop counter and hung a chandelier fashioned from a cluster of lampshades above. Walls and ceilings are lined with hand-painted hessian, and Swedish linen curtains obscure the windows. Caged bulbs are suspended at different lengths from extra long wires, while concrete plinths are used as displays. It all adds up to an air of repurposed elegance.

Above: JamesPlumb hung panels of hessian on the walls and from the ceiling to create a tented effect; an antique church pew serves as a counter, and a chandelier of vintage lamp shades adds a Victorian note.

Opened last February, the Bistrot Bruno Loubet in the Zetter Hotel marked a return to London for the famed chef (he decamped to Brisbane for an eight-year interlude). Located in a Georgian townhouse, with interiors designed by Russell Sage, the restaurant features a curving wall of windows overlooking St. John's Square and an appealing mix of vintage (midcentury task lights, industrial whisks) combined with new pieces. For more information, go to Bistrot Bruno Loubet.

My favorite holiday present (discovered under the tree): Books Do Furnish a Room, by self-confessed bibliophile Leslie Geddes-Brown.
